A different perspective

I remember my fascination with airplanes when I was little. I loved it when my parents took my brothers and I to see them land at the Mexico City airport. Those of us who are over 50 years old still remember seeing the Air France Concorde arriving on Sunday afternoons many times. It was certainly impressive, as the Concorde was a plane that denoted elegance and class and it was exciting to see it flying over the city's skies.

Later I started getting on planes and I loved seeing the perspective from above, seeing how everything seemed tiny, when in reality they were enormous, and although I did not have the opportunity to become a pilot, since life took me down another path, with the recent opening and technology through drones, I have had the great virtue of exploring in more detail one of my great hobbies, which is aerial photography.

In recent years, there has been an opening to obtain these devices and make them more affordable for everyone, and although they still have high prices, you are increasingly finding cheaper drones on the market.

My story with these devices begins 5 years ago when I was given my first DJI drone, the model was Mavic Mini. This little toy came in a hard case, with a controller, propeller protection, and the drone was so small that it fit in my hand. In short, a great surprise.

Getting started with it was quite a challenge, hence the importance of reading the manual to see how the toy worked. I tell you that the drone has a camera built into the body of the craft, which goes up and down 180 degrees. In fact, the remote control connects to your cell phone through an App from the same company and you use the screen to see what the drone is seeing in full flight. From there you can move the drone's camera up and down up to 180 degrees, and with the control you maneuver the drone up, down, etc... and you can take photos or record video. This equipment is wonderful because it weighs less than 250 grams, and it is ideal to start getting into the subject of drones and practice and practice, until you have more confidence.

Important note: Drones are not waterproof and can also be expensive toys if not used carefully!!!

From my personal point of view, it has been an incentive for me to get outside, to see fascinating places directly by travelling or often very close to your town. Since we live more and more hooked on a world of technology, drones take you to do it in direct contact with nature. When I fly drones I feel much more in the moment, in some way it is like a meditative practice that gives you emotions and feelings of gratitude that make you feel happy and at peace. Spending time in an open space, whether it be a forest, beach, lake, etc… can benefit your physical and mental health, supporting your mood, reducing feelings of stress and forcing you to take time off from your daily activities and routine.

February 2022 – Aerial photograph taken with a DJI Mavic Air 2S drone – For this photograph, I arrived at the Xochimilco Ecological Park at 7:00 AM and began to fly my drone to see the space of this beautiful park. I noticed that there were many trajineras in line and I loved seeing how the sun began to illuminate the canal on the left and the trajineras. I definitely recommend visiting this park, it is a real gem and they keep it very well maintained.

I find it very funny that many people approach you out of curiosity and end up looking at the screen of your cell phone over your shoulder, asking you all kinds of questions about what you are seeing on the screen, and it also connects you with people on social networks who share the same interest, and even people who follow you because they like your content. It helps a lot to connect on social networks with a wide variety of groups of enthusiastic pilots with whom you can share your experiences and receive feedback from them, which is a great way to solidify your knowledge. Becoming an amateur in this activity can be relatively inexpensive from the start, it is not an expensive hobby to start with, and little by little you can implement your technology, there are more and more options and, above all, more affordable ones. Little by little you learn, because there is a lot to learn and this never ends. The portability of drones allows you to move around easily and take them anywhere. He thinks that the world looks very different from above and as I thought with my parents when we saw the planes at the airport, you will always find a perspective that will make it worth seeing from there and sharing it with the world.
